Transferring Thermal Energy
Subjects / Core Science / Edexcel GCSE Science
The transfer of thermal energy is very important in physics and has applications in many industries. In this title, you will learn about the three main ways in which thermal energy is transferred - conduction, convection and radiation. You will learn that conduction is affected by different factors, such as the material in which the heat transfer is occurring, and why these factors are important. You will learn about convection, which only occurs in fluids like water and air, and how it influences ocean currents and the weather. This title also explains thermal transfer by radiation, which brings heat from the Sun to the Earth, and how different surfaces emit and absorb this radiated heat. Finally, we will examine how heat transfer can be prevented, and why the insulating process is important for both people and the environment.

Titles
Chapters
- All bodies emit and absorb thermal radiation
- Conduction and Convection
- Dark, matt surfaces are good absorbers and good emitters of radiation. Light, shiny surfaces are poor absorbers and poor emitters of radiation
- describe convection in liquids and gases in terms of the movement of the molecules of the liquid or gas
- describe methods of reducing heat loss from the home
- describe the effect that the nature of a surface has on the emission and absorption of radiant heat, including some applications
- describe the thermal conduction in good conductors and in insulators in terms of the movement of electrons and vibrational movement of atoms/molecules
- Energy Efficiency
- Good and Bad Emitters of Radiation
- The bigger the temperature difference between a body and its surroundings, the faster the rate at which heat is transferred
- The hotter a body the more energy it radiates
- The shape and dimensions of a body affect the rate at which it transfers heat
- The transfer of energy by conduction and convection involves particles and how this transfer takes place
- Thermal (infra red) radiation is the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves
- Thermal Radiation
- Under similar conditions different materials transfer heat at different rates
- Variations in transfer
- Work Done and Energy Transferred
