Animal Farm: Characters
Subjects / English / George Orwell - Animal Farm
The characters form an essential part of the novella, Animal Farm. We have 'the big three' - the pigs named Napoleon, Snowball and Squealer. Napoleon is the tyrannical dictator; Snowball is the idealist who supports the Revolution but is chased out by Napoleon; Squealer is the clever one who manipulates the masses and supports Napoleon's rise to power. Each of these pigs is based on a prominent figure of the Russian Revolution. There are several other characters, all of whom serve a very specific purpose and represent different things in Orwell's political allegory. You can find more information on how the novella is a political allegory in another GCSEpod title - Animal Farm by George Orwell: Context.
