All novels exist within a historical context and this is reflected in the text. To Kill a Mockingbird was written in the 1960s, and is set in the 1930s. These were two very different eras, as we will consider. This title gives an overview of the plot, as well as detailing how Harper Lee's own childhood was similar to Scout's, the narrator of the novel. It will also look at how the novelist combines two different genres, why the setting of Maycomb is so important and the significance of adaptations of the novel.
