Subjects / GCSE Essentials / Modern World History
World War One was unlike any other war that had affected British society, and the first example in Modern World History of Total War.
Wars fought in the past had little impact on those at home. However, as the stalemate continued on the battlefields of Europe, every section of British society became involved in a campaign of total war. Total war encompassed men, women and even children as they all had to contribute in their own way to the war effort at home. Government policy controlled and planned all aspects of everyday life in Britain. Everything from farming to people's eating habits was directly geared towards total victory in Europe.
