After the Second World War, the big question that loomed was what form an independent India would take. It initially appeared that an agreement had been reached, but this proved to be short lived. In a final attempt by the British to find a solution, Lord Mountbatten was appointed as Viceroy. He decided to divide the country. So, on the 15th of August 1947 two new states were created, India and Pakistan.
