They had promised the Russian people 'Bread, Land and Peace', and knew if they did not fulfil their promises they would soon lose power. The Bolsheviks had to strengthen their position quickly and crush any opposition they faced. This struggle for complete authority across Russia would soon result in a civil war, as the Bolsheviks fought against opponents resisting their leadership. The policies they introduced during the Civil War were greeted with widespread opposition. However, the Bolsheviks managed to secure power in Russia by introducing important economic and social measures, and by intimidating and arresting those who opposed them. When Lenin died in 1924, the Bolshevik party had restored law and order to Russia and, most importantly, they had established a Communist dictatorship.
